Carles Gumí was born in Barcelona into a family of artist, mother violinist and father photographer and art researcher. The interest that the natural sciences reveals to him makes that he studies geology in the University of Barcelona and in parallel he studies percussion and composition in the Superior Conservatory of Music of Barcelona (CSMMB).

He begins conducting through the courses organized by the Catalan Federation of Choral Entities (FCEC) and he enters the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMuC) and obtains the Superior Title, in the speciality of Orchestral Conducting.

He has been conductor of the Choir of Geology of the University of Barcelona, the Choir of the University of Barcelona and currently the Schola Cantorum University Barcinonensis. Occasionally he has conducted several choirs in and outside of Catalonia.

Since 2002 he is the artistic director of the University of Barcelona Orchestra (OUB) with which he maintains a stable program within the Season of Music at the University.

Among the orchestras he has conducted it is worth to mention: the Wind Orchestra of Unió Musical del Bages, the Orchestra Filharmonia Hekàteros, the Symphony Orchestra City of Eivissa (OSCE), the Orchestra of the Superior Conservatory of Music of the Liceo, the National Chamber Orchestra of Andorra (ONCA) and the SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra of Australia (SBS Youth Orchestra). He has been an assistant director of the Joves Intèrprets dels Països Catalans (OJIPC)
and develops an educational task conducting the Orquestra Andreví at the Professional Conservatory  of Cervera.

His creative work is reflected in a significant number of works premiered in and outside Catalonia and in several published and recorded works. Abroad, his works have been performed in France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Argentina and United States. Works for choir are the most important in his catalog and he often receive composition comissions.
