Biographical sketch

An spirit of constant learning and the Renaissance model of multidisciplinary man have marked the career of Carles Gumí (Barcelona, 1963). Born into an artists family, his mother was violinist and his father was photographer and art researcher, he has always looked for an ideal of integral and eclectic education. His interest in natural sciences stimulate him to study Geology at the University of Barcelona. During this period he discovers the world of the Computer Science that, after an intense period of training, becomes one of his passions and one way of professional development.

The scientific part has his contrast in the artistic. Through his father he enters the world of the art and learns the concepts relative to the image, the visual communication and the aesthetics. By means of his mother he enters the world of the music and he studies Percussion and Composition at the Municipal Conservatory of Music of Barcelona. Afterwards, he obtains the superior title in Orchestral conducting at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMuC).

His creativity, rewarded several times, remains reflected in an important quantity of works performed, published and recorded in Catalonia and other countries. He has collaborated, as a percussionist or as a singer, with all kinds of formations: jazz, cobla(Catalan dance band), orchestra, choirs. As a conductor, he has led many choral formations, chamber ensembles and band or symphonic orchestras. In musicology, he has made the review and edition of the work Poema Romàntic (Romantic Poem) for baritone and large symphonic orchestra, by Joan Lamote de Grignon, and edited by Tritò Ed. Carles Gumí is often invited to form part of jury of diverse contests of choral interpretation and since 2001 he is in the jury of the International Festival of Music of Cantonigròs. Currently, he also develops a pedagogic task as a teacher of the Professional Conservatory of Music of Cervera where he conducts the Orchestra Andreví.
