Composer

In opinion of Carles Gumí, composition is a way of personal expression which allows the transmission of feelings while establishing a positive communication with the listener. Using a modal language with reminiscences of jazz and with some works that border the atonality, he has always wanted to run away from the speculation and the avant-garde while pursuing an ideal of classical training. That’s why counterpoint has an important role in his compositions.

His creative interest is awakened during the years of study of the harmony with Josep Poch at the Municipal Superior Conservatory of Music of Barcelona. In that period, he obtains the first awards in competitions of young composers. After making the courses of counterpoint and fugue with the same teacher, he continues studying composition with Carles Guinovart in the same conservatory.

His work is reflected in an important amount of pieces, premièred in Catalonia and other countries, and in several published and recorded works. Abroad, his works have been performed in France, GErmany, Italy, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Argentina and the United States. Likewise, his compositions have been rewarded on different competitions: 5è. Prize of Mountain Songs “Elisard Sala” (1985), 2nd., 4th., 9th. And 10th. Competition of Young Composers of the Catalan Institute of Services to the Youth – Generalitat de Catalunya (1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994), finalist Prize Sardanes SGAE 1995 and Catalonia Prizes of Choral Composition 1996. Works for choir are the most important in his catalog and he has often received composition comissions.
